Office of Career Services offers tips for virtual job searches

Looking for a job can be a daunting task. Throw a global pandemic into the mix, and the thought of trying to find a great job can seem almost impossible. The UL Lafayette Office of Career Services is here to help alumni navigate these new challenges when it comes to searching for a job in today's world.

Kimberly Billeaudeau '95 is the director of the Office of Career Services. This office aims to help connect students and alumni back to the University as it relates to jobs and careers. The Office of Career Services helps with everything related to searching for a job, including resumes, mock interviews, and professional dress tips. With many companies moving to remote work and virtual job interviews, we spoke with Billeaudea to see how alumni can best prepare to find a job during a global pandemic. Here are five tips to help you during your job search!

1. Testing Your Technology

Many companies are turning to virtual job interviews instead of in-person. Make sure you test your technology before your interview begins by checking your camera, microphone's clarity, and internet connection. Because the last thing you want to happen is dropping off of your virtual interview mid-sentence due to a technical issue. Taking ten minutes to check these things before the interview begins can allow you to relax and focus on the recruiter's questions.

2. Professional Dress Is Still Important

Even though you may be having a virtual interview, it's still important to dress the part. Ensure you're wearing professional attire, even if you have an interview from your living room sofa. Try to avoid wearing busy colors or bright patterns during your virtual interview. You want the recruiter's primary focus to be on you, not the details of your outfit.

3. Key Places to Look for Job Openings

LinkedIn is not only an excellent tool for connecting with others, but it's also a great place to find a job. Billeaudeau says that LinkedIn has become a valuable tool for job seekers. Make sure that your profile stays updated with a recent headshot and work experience. UL Lafayette also offers another great place to find jobs: Handshake. 4. Networking is #1

Even in a world filled with Zoom calls and virtual events, Billeadeau says that networking is still the best way to find a job. In today's virtual world, it's essential to be present. Take time to discover your skills and see how they can apply to different jobs that interest you. Stay positive, and remember that you got this!
